How to use a hyaluronic acid serum

Updated October 9, 2026 · 6-minute read

The short answer: apply a thin coat to clean, slightly damp skin, let it absorb for a minute, then carry on with the rest of your routine. Use it morning and night, before thicker products and before sunscreen. If it ever feels tight in very dry air, apply it to damper skin, use a little more, or add a thin seal on top.

Step by step

  1. Cleanse gently. Use a non-stripping, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water; hot water pulls moisture from skin (source).
  2. Leave skin slightly damp. Pat with a towel instead of rubbing.
  3. Apply a thin coat. For the face and neck, about a quarter teaspoon. Spread it evenly rather than rubbing hard.
  4. Wait about a minute. Let it absorb before the next product.
  5. Finish your routine. Treatment products, then anything thicker, then sunscreen in the morning.

Damp skin or dry skin?

Damp is better. Dermatologists recommend moisturizing while skin is still damp after washing (source), and a humectant like hyaluronic acid has water right there to hold on to. It isn’t a strict rule: it still works on dry skin, it just has less water to start with (source).

Why it can sometimes feel drying

Hyaluronic acid doesn’t make water; it holds it. In very dry air (desert climates, winter heating, airplanes) a thin layer of humectant on otherwise dry skin can feel tight. The fix is simple (source):

A serum with more than one water-binding ingredient also helps. Draíocht pairs hyaluronic acid with propanediol and trehalose, which helps skin hold on to water in dry conditions.

Morning, night, or both?

Both. Hyaluronic acid is gentle enough for twice-daily use. In the morning it goes under sunscreen and makeup; at night it’s a good first layer before anything else. Consistency matters more than the number of products you use.

Layering order with other products

Using with…Order
NiacinamideEither order, or one product with both. More here.
Vitamin CVitamin C serum, then hyaluronic acid (or the reverse). Both before moisturizer and sunscreen (source).
Retinol or tretinoinHyaluronic acid first to cushion dryness, let it absorb, then the retinoid; or follow your dermatologist’s order.
Exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA)Acid first, then hyaluronic acid to keep skin comfortable (source).
SunscreenAlways last in the morning (before makeup).
MakeupLet the serum absorb fully first; it makes a smooth base.

How long until you see a difference?

Skin feels more hydrated right after you apply it. A smoother, softer look builds with steady daily use over the following weeks, and fades if you stop; hydration is ongoing care, not a permanent change. Hyaluronic acid serums are cosmetic: they improve how skin looks and feels, and don’t replace fillers or medical treatment.

Try any new product on a small area first, and stop if irritation occurs.

Questions

Should I apply hyaluronic acid serum to wet or dry skin?

Slightly damp skin works best. Pat dry after washing and apply right away. It still works on dry skin; it just has less water to hold on to.

Why does hyaluronic acid sometimes make my skin feel dry?

Hyaluronic acid holds water rather than creating it. In very dry air, a thin layer on dry skin can feel tight. Apply it to damp skin, use enough for an even layer, and in harsh conditions add a thin seal such as jojoba oil or shea butter.

Can I use hyaluronic acid morning and night?

Yes. It is gentle enough for twice-daily use: under sunscreen and makeup in the morning, and as a first layer at night.

Does hyaluronic acid go before or after moisturizer?

Before. Water-based serums go on first, then thicker creams or oils, then sunscreen in the morning.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with retinol?

Yes. Many people apply hyaluronic acid first to help with retinol dryness, let it absorb, then apply the retinoid. If a dermatologist has given you an order, follow theirs.

How much hyaluronic acid serum should I use?

A thin, even coat: about a quarter teaspoon for the face and neck. For the body, roughly half a teaspoon for both hands or both forearms and about a teaspoon for both lower legs.

How long does hyaluronic acid take to work?

Skin feels more hydrated right away. A smoother, softer look builds with consistent daily use over a few weeks and fades if you stop.
